Acid Sulfate Soil Assessments

Our experienced scientists and engineers can provide site assessment and management advise to ensure that impacts relating to acid sulfate soils (ASS) issues are mitigated and effectively managed in accordance with local planning schemes and policies.

What is Acid Sulfate Soil?

Naturally occurring ASS and sediments contain iron sulphides, most commonly “pyrite”, which can rapidly form sulphuric acid when exposed to oxygen. This acid can leach into surrounding waters and soil, with potential to cause damage to the natural and built environment.

Acid Sulfate Soil Reports, Management Plans & Construction Services

We typically provide the following services relating to ASS, often in combination with Geotechnical Investigations:
Site investigation, soil sampling and analysis requirements to meet the relevant state and local authority guidelines.
Recovery of soil, groundwater and surface water samples using a variety of techniques according to project requirements and site accessibility.
Laboratory testing of soil and water using our NATA accredited sub-contractors.
Insight and advice regarding the extent and severity of ASS, and the nature of the associated groundwater and surface water interactions.
Preparation of ASS Management Plans and Dewatering Management Plans, detailing strategies, targets and responsibilities to mitigate risks during construction and development.
During construction, experienced professional staff can conduct training for construction personnel, test treated soil and water and provide advice to address issues that may arise.
