Background

The Great Barrier Reef is Queensland’s greatest attraction and is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.  The surface water catchment that feeds into it is vast, covering most of Queensland including major river systems, Fitzroy, Mary, Brisbane, and Bremer Rivers.  The significant rainfall received in these areas over the last couple years has led to numerous flash flooding events.  The flood waters erode the riverbanks and carry sediments through the system, eventually clogging the Great Barrier Reef contributing to coral bleaching events.

Scope

Tectonic was called in by Alluvium Consulting to complete detailed geotechnical investigations at several sites along Queensland’s major river systems where significant erosion was observed.  Borehole drilling was completed to depths around 20 m BGL and numerous soil samples were recovered for geotechnical and environmental laboratory testing.  Tectonic subsequently utilised the information gathered in the borehole drilling and laboratory testing to undertake slope stability analysis and consider remediation options.

Challenges

Managing logistics associated with remote investigations.
Limiting unwanted interactions with wildlife (snakes, crocodiles, bulls, etc)
Evaluating erosion processes and their interaction with global stability whilst being sympathetic to the amenity of the natural bushland
