Background

The project aims to enhance public amenities, pathways, parks, playgrounds and landscaping as well as improve coastal protection works with much of the foreshore revetment to be upgraded.  Tectonic has been involved through several phases of the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project providing input for the northern parklands, headland boardwalk, proposed seawalls and central parklands.

Scope

The investigation phases involved a combination of surface mapping the steeper headland slopes as well as deep and shallow borehole drilling at multiple locations across existing pathways and parklands as well as on the beach itself for assessment of seawall foundation conditions.  The fieldwork had to be carefully coordinated to avoid interaction with the public in the busy tourist area with each location painstakingly cleared for underground services prior to breaking ground.  The different means of investigation were tailored to suit the anticipated ground conditions which varied from high strength sandstone exposed at ground surface in the headland bluffs, to beach sands that were saturated across the intertidal zone.

Challenges

The project reminds us of what a paradise it is that we live in.  But with our work being carried out in such an iconic tourist area we had to be diligent, public safety was paramount and our team went above and beyond to ensure no one was put at risk.

An infilled paleo channel of alluvial sediments inferred to be associated with a relic river mouth was identified in the area of the Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club.
