Background

Following the extreme rainfall event in early 2022, numerous roads within the greater Sunshine Coast region were impacted by landslides.  Varying geological conditions landslide failure mechanisms were dealt with, including rock falls, debris slides and deep-seated rotational failures.

Scope

Tectonic initially completed preliminary risk assessments and short-term risk management plans.  This was followed by detailed geotechnical investigations using a variety of methods including excavation of test pits, drilling of boreholes and installation of ground monitoring systems.  Tectonic subsequently prepared detailed remedial designs including measures such as rock fill embankments, gravity and piled retaining walls, shear pile walls and various batter treatments.

Challenges

A variety of geological and groundwater conditions were encountered, with numerous failure mechanisms.
Most of the sites were spatially constrained by the road corridor and steep terrain so a variety of methods were adopted in the detailed designs to reinstate the road formations and achieve long-term stability for the local communities.
