Background

Since our formation in 2013 we have worked regularly in the Bundaberg region, expanding to complete up to about 20 specialist investigations annually. We take pride in maintaining our relationships with local authorities, consultants and contractors. Tectonic have a significant archive of projects working in the differing geological environments locally ranging from the younger dune sands and estuarine ‘soft soil’ deposits closer to the coast, transitioning through basalt flows that emanated from ‘The Hummock’ and deeply weathered sedimentary strata of the Elliot Formation. To the west the region progresses to outcrops of much older geology, and steeper incised landscapes.

Scope

Geotechnical investigations regularly comprise a mixture of small to large scale subdivisions (including wastewater disposal) buildings (e.g. schools, basements, port facilities) road and rail (e.g. bridges, railway embankments) underground infrastructure (e.g. water and sewer mains) and additions to existing landfill sites (e.g. waste transfer stations). Slope stability assessments have been undertaken for individual residences on ‘The Hummock’, high banks on the Burnett River; and further west in older rock units. For road infrastructure, we have completed a number of detailed risk assessments for soil and rock cuttings.

Construction services include earthworks quality control (e.g. bulk filling, landfill liners) and foundation verification.

Challenges

Project work is planned to ensure a regular presence in the region, and rapid response to site queries where requested.

Evaluating geological and geomorphological processes and interaction with global stability (e.g. riverbanks) and construction difficulties (e.g. obstructions in basaltic soils, groundwater and acid sulfate soils in coastal environments).
